LEGAL FEES AND COSTS
One of the most important issues to you is fees. I do not bill hourly. I charge a flat fee based on my judgment and past experience on what time I would have to spend on your case if it were to go to a trial by judge or jury. My fees vary because no two cases are ever the same. Your friend may tell you his lawyer only charged him X for his case, but the facts in your case may have a different set of circumstances that make yours perhaps more difficult.
What I have found in over 40 years of charging flat fees for criminal matters is that the client is happy with the fact that once the fee is paid, in full, in advance, no matter how “painful,” the issue of money is never discussed again. You have unlimited reasonable access to me and if I make a miscalculation of the time involved to handle your matter that is my problem, not yours and no additional legal fees will be charged to you.
OTHER COSTS YOU MAY INCUR
You will, however, be responsible for additional outside charges for investigators, expert witnesses, forensic work and all other actual costs necessary to properly prepare your defense, but you will make the final decision on incurring these costs. You will also be required to sign a written retainer agreement setting forth the terms and conditions of my representing you as required by the California Business and Professions Code.
